Diyaluma Falls is a powerful contrast to the gentle scenery surrounding Ella. Plunging over 220 metres down a sheer cliff face, this magnificent cascade is the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and a truly spectacular day trip destination. What makes Diyaluma so compelling is not just the view of the entire fall from the base, but the adventure of hiking to the very top, where a series of pristine natural pools await, offering one of the most incredible swimming experiences in the Hill Country.
Planning Your Journey from Ella
Diyaluma Falls is located about 40 kilometres from Ella, making it a perfect half or full day excursion. Since there is no direct public train or bus, your transport options are generally limited to private hire, though the journey itself is a delight of winding roads and endless tea terraces.
A tuk tuk is the most popular way to travel. The round trip will take approximately three to four hours in total travel time, plus the time you spend hiking and swimming. Negotiate the price with your driver for the entire return journey, specifying that you need to be dropped off at the upper falls trailhead near Poonagala village, not the base of the waterfall. Expect the price to be around LKR 4000 to LKR 6000 for the full trip.
For the adventurous, renting a scooter is also a fantastic option, giving you the freedom to stop whenever you wish along the scenic, though sometimes bumpy, mountain roads.

The Two Hiking Routes Explained
When planning your visit, you must decide whether you want to approach the falls from the bottom or the top. The experience differs dramatically.
The Base Viewpoint
The base of the waterfall is accessible directly from the main A4 highway near Koslanda. This is where you can stand on the bridge and gaze up at the tremendous height of the cascade. You will find small local vendors selling king coconuts and snacks here, and it makes for an excellent initial photo stop.
The Upper Falls Hike The Easy Route
To reach the famed natural pools at the top, the easiest and most recommended path is to have your driver take you to the starting point high above the falls, often near a local military camp or the Poonagala tea region. From this drop off point, the trail to the upper falls is surprisingly short and manageable. The path is often a simple 20 to 30 minute walk, largely downhill or flat, cutting through long grasses and small forest patches. While the trail is not officially signposted, it is generally well trodden, and you will hear the sound of the rushing water guiding you to the first set of pools.

The Natural Pools and Cliff Edge View
Reaching the upper section is the true reward of the day trip. Here, the water of the Kirindi Oya river flows over the massive plateau, creating multiple natural cascading rock pools. These pools are perfect for swimming and cooling off after the journey.
The highest pool is the most sought after, as it sits right at the cliff edge, offering a completely unrestricted, spectacular panorama over the southern plains stretching towards the distant horizon. When standing here, you get a unique sense of scale, watching the water rush over the cliff and listening to the roar of the falls far below.

You may encounter local informal guides offering to show you the best pools or safest jumping spots. While the main trail is simple, a guide can be helpful for navigating the specific pools and ensuring safety, especially if you are travelling alone.

Safety and Best Time to Visit
Diyaluma Falls is an untouched natural wonder, which means there are no handrails, barriers, or official lifeguards. Extreme caution is required at all times.
- Avoid the Edge: Never walk or stand too close to the main drop off point. Rocks are incredibly slippery, even when dry.
- Check the Current: Do not swim in the pools during the wet season, typically from October to December. Heavy rains dramatically increase the water flow and make the pools and paths highly dangerous. The best time to visit is during the dryer months.
- What to Bring: Wear proper footwear for the hike. Carry plenty of water, sunscreen, and a waterproof bag for your electronics.

The sense of awe you feel standing on top of Sri Lanka’s second tallest waterfall, bathing in a cool, natural infinity pool, is an unmatched feeling of freedom. A day trip to Diyaluma is the perfect escape from the tea scented hills of Ella and into a wilder, more dramatic landscape.
