While Ella offers a bounty of scenic viewpoints, a short journey away lies a legendary spot where a famous tea empire was born: Lipton’s Seat. This viewpoint, located near the charming, less touristy town of Haputale, provides a majestic panoramic view that famously spans across seven different provinces of Sri Lanka on a clear day. Paired with a visit to the historic Dambatenne Tea Factory at its base, this day trip offers the perfect blend of breathtaking nature and cultural history.

The Birthplace of an Empire The Dambatenne Tea Factory
The adventure begins at the Dambatenne Tea Factory, a historical structure built in 1890 by none other than Sir Thomas Lipton himself. This is not just any factory; it is where the very first Lipton Tea was manufactured and sold, and its legacy is deeply interwoven with the history of Ceylon Tea.
The factory still operates using much of the original, century old machinery, giving visitors an authentic, step back in time experience. A guided tour walks you through the intricate processes of tea making: from the withering racks where the leaves dry, to the enormous rollers that crush the leaves, and finally to the fermentation rooms. It is a fantastic opportunity to see the manual effort and precision required to create the world famous black tea. Since the factory closes for processing on Sundays and sometimes halts machinery in the afternoons, the best time to visit the Dambatenne factory is on a weekday morning.

The Ascent to Lipton’s Seat
The seven kilometre journey from the factory entrance up to the summit of Lipton’s Seat is an essential part of the experience. It is a scenic route that winds its way through steep, terraced tea plantations.
Getting There from Ella
Lipton’s Seat is roughly 1.5 hours by road from Ella, although the nearest major town is Haputale.
- Private Tuk Tuk The easiest option is to hire a tuk tuk for a full return day trip from Ella. Your driver will take you all the way to the Dambatenne factory entrance and then either wait or take you up the steep road to the viewpoint. Negotiate a price for the entire trip, including the waiting time.
- Public Transport For a more adventurous and budget conscious trip, take a bus from Ella to Bandarawela, and then a second bus to Haputale. From Haputale, you can then catch a local bus (Route 326) or a tuk tuk up to the Dambatenne factory base.
The Final Hike
Once you reach the entrance gate, you have the option to take a tuk tuk the rest of the way, or, more enjoyably, walk the final four to five kilometres. The hike is mostly uphill, but it is one of the most beautiful walks in the region, taking you directly through the heart of the tea estates where you will meet tea pluckers at work.

The Viewpoint and the Legend
The summit of Lipton’s Seat is where Sir Thomas Lipton himself would sit, watching over his entire tea domain and dreaming of his global tea empire. From the simple observation platform, the 360 degree vista is one of immense scale. On a perfectly clear day, your eye can travel across the vast landscape, potentially spotting Udawalawe Lake and other distant landmarks.
At the very top, there is a small statue of the tea baron, and a tiny local tea stall where you can buy a simple, hot cup of Lipton’s Ceylonta tea, enjoyed right at the source of its creation.
Timing is Everything for Clear Views
The crucial factor for a successful visit is timing. The Hill Country weather is famously unpredictable, and the mist and clouds often roll in heavily by mid morning, completely obscuring the panorama.
To guarantee the clearest views, you must aim to arrive at the viewpoint before 8:00 AM. This often means leaving Ella by 5:30 AM to catch the magical sunrise and the soft, golden light that bathes the plantations. While an early start is demanding, the reward of seeing the view before the clouds settle is priceless. The secondary benefit of an early start is seeing the tea pluckers starting their day’s work in the fields below.
